Includes papers submitted to the Secretary of State in compliance with election statutes. Until 1910, records consist of abstracts of votes compiled by county and state officials declaring election results for federal, state, district and county offices; referendums; and primary elections (1906-). Entries for each abstract includes: type of election (e.g., general); positions up for election, or referendum propositions submitted; candidate names and party affiliation; votes received; county; election dates and abstract certification. Statewide abstracts from county abstracts, which appear infrequently before 1848, give statewide vote totals and after 1960, abstracts of county elections results are not included. Filed with election returns is correspondence concerning contested elections and voting irregularities. Other election papers (1910- ) include: certificates (e.g., certifying nominating conventions, district organization, number of candidates, nominations, and referendum publication); statements (e.g., candidacy, withdrawl of candidacy, protests to State Electoral Board, details of pending referendum, loyalty oaths); court orders; hearing transcripts; nominating convention reports; objections to declarations of intention; petitions (e.g., candidacy, recounts); notices of contest of elections; and Secretary of State election literature samples. Petitions, affidavits, and newspaper clippings concerning new political movements (e.g., Socialist Party, 1928-1940; Progressive Party, 1948-1950) being placed on the ballot are included (1924-). There are abstracts of votes from soldiers (1862) and soldier applications for ballots (1942) plus correspondence concerning transmittal and certification of documents.
